Hurricane Katrina
Okay, I just read the most asinine comment about hurricane Katrina yet:

“They are better off than before the hurricane . They are nothing but animals anyway . Look at what they did in the superdome and to the superdome.”

Oh no, they ruined the precious superdome? Gee, you’d think thousands of people stuffed into a sport’s arena for days with no working plumbing or electricity and scarcely any food or water would be more considerate. I mean, sure, they just lost their homes and everything they own, and possibly family members and friends as well, but hey, they’re better off anyway, right? Seriously.. wtf?

The more I keep hearing about this, the more utterly ridiculous and horribly disappointing it becomes... Shouldn’t we, as one of the richest countries in the world, be able to bring aid to our own people? I realize that is a ton of people to try and tend to, but it really shouldn’t be this chaotic, should it?

"LARRY BRADSHAW and LORRIE BETH SLONSKY are emergency medical services (EMS) workers from San Francisco and contributors to Socialist Worker. They were attending an EMS conference in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck. They spent most of the next week trapped by the flooding--and the martial law cordon around the city. Here, they tell their story."

And, neversremedy led me to this post by threegoldfish, which led me to this commentary on Barbara Bush’s comment in an interview/Katrina in general, which led me to this further discussion of Barbara Bush’s comment, and the aforementioned asinine comment. Also, scroll down on that last link and find a long post entitled “What has Happened to Us?” by Casey Kelley. That speaks alot.
